Buddha in the leaves, Sukhothai Historic Park, Thailand

"Every human is an artist. The dream of your life is to make beautiful art."
― Don Miguel Ruiz

Sukhothai Historic Park

Such incredible adventures during my 3-week visit! I ventured North to Sukhothai: the name itself means “Dawn of happiness”. I spent one very happy afternoon exploring the ruins on a bright orange bicycle. The Sukhothai Historical Park is the medieval capital of Sukhothai and contains nearly 200 ruins over roughly 30 miles. Inspiration found me dancing in the light of the ancient statues, pagodas and stupas.

In my studio, I experiment with watercolor, acrylic, collage, oil and wax, creating handpainted textures which I layer and blend into the impressionistic final image.

ENCAUSTIC ORIGINALS - What is Encaustic?

The word encaustic originates from the Greek word enkaustikos which means to burn in; all encaustic paintings integrate the element of heat. The paint itself is a mixture of beeswax, damar resin, and colored pigments. Beeswax is nature’s archival material, it is water resistant and will not yellow or darken over time.

Encaustic originals are created in many layers, entirely by hand and are, by nature, completely unique.

First, I carefully sand the edges and apply a foundation of gesso to the wood, then I adhere recycled book pages on the edges of the board followed by a light brush with gold paint. Each hand-printed photograph is mounted to wood using archival matte medium, and sealed with the first layer of wax. Subsequent layers of color and texture are fused together with a heat gun. The composition is fine-tuned with a palette knife to shape and manipulate the wax once it has cooled onto the surface.

Please keep your original encaustic out of extreme heat and take care with the edges so as not to crack the wax. Buff the painting with a lint free cloth to bring up a lustrous sheen.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS: As with all art forms, encaustic artwork should not be exposed to direct sunlight or extreme temperatures. Occasional light buffing with a soft dry cotton cloth will help maintain the intriguing texture and translucent surface.
